Read Jeanette's Story

I came from a corporate background and spent a number of years working within the insurance industry in London, underwriting Employer's Liability and Public Liability insurance risks.

I was fortunate enough to work for various high-profile companies for about 12 years at which time I was able to learn a lot about myself and the industry, but eventually, my mind started shifting and I began feeling unfulfilled with regard to my job and uncertain about what I wanted for my future.

Although I felt grateful for the opportunities I had received along the way, I knew that working in that environment was not what I wanted to do for the rest of my life.

I struggled with a lot of issues during my time in the insurance industry such as racism, sexism, and ageism, but I must say that each obstacle taught me a lot, and has contributed to making me the person I am today, so it was definitely a period in my life that I am glad to have experienced.

I decided to set myself a five year plan, which meant that at the end of those five years, I would quit my day job and start working for myself as an event planner. Event planning is what I was passionate about and what I felt I would thrive at so for me it was an opportunity to make an impact doing something I loved.

The fifth year quickly came around and it was finally time for me to take a leap of faith and finally quit my day job, so guess what I did?….

Well, I did what most people do… I stepped back and thought...

Jeanette… You're not ready for this?

Jeanette… You don't have enough money saved

Jeanette… What if you fail?

Jeanette… Are you really going to leave a stable job that pays you an okay salary to jump into a pool of uncertainty?

Jeanette… Maybe you should wait another year... or two… or three

I think these are the general voices and thoughts we constantly battle with internally, and those voices and concerns are ultimately what stop us from moving forward, stepping into our purpose and taking a chance on ourselves.

I had started to convince myself that it would definitely make more sense to wait at least one more year, which would give me the opportunity to save some more money and give me the time to be more prepared, then suddenly, out of nowhere, my dad died...

For me, the impact of my dad's death led me to feel like I just didn't have time to waste.

The doubts that I had felt just before this happened were now starting to reverse. I began thinking...

What if I never saved enough money to become self-employed?…

What if I was taken from this world without being truly happy?…

What if I never got the opportunity to feel truly fulfilled or if I never got the chance to do what really mattered to me?...

The period that followed my dad's death was very difficult for a lot of reasons. My dad and I didn't have a great relationship when he passed and again I had always felt like I had enough time on my hands, to make things better between us, time to resolve issues and time to work on our relationship when in actual fact, time had run out and that has become such a huge lesson to me and something I still struggle with.

Once the funeral had passed, I returned to work and I just have to say that my employer at the time was absolutely diabolical! I mean terrible! Bearing in mind that I was my dad's only child and had to organize the funeral and put everything in place, and was with him during his last days, the pressure was literally overbearing at times, so to have my employer telling me that they needed me to provide them with a doctors certificate to validate my time off was a shock and a reality check. They were also giving me stick about the amount of time I had taken off work (it was two weeks). During an already stressful and horrific time, I found that working for somebody, specifically that company, made an already stressful time even more stressful. I realized that I had a mind shift and something within me had changed.

All of these things became huge factors for me at that time and I returned to work having made the decision that it was time for me to just go for it,… It was time to jump.

I had decided that I no longer wanted to work with people that were literally stone-cold and emotionless towards me and my situation, and that didn't care about my well-being at all. It was official… I was just another bum on the seat… that's it. Well that’s how I felt at least.

On the first day that I returned to my job, I resigned and my gosh, the feeling was incredible! I was finally in control of my destiny.

I had to work my notice period which was three months, and I am going to tell you that it was the longest three months of my life! By the time the end of the third month came, I was pumped and excited about walking into my purpose and starting a new chapter in my life. I was finally starting my journey into self-employment, which to me equalled more time, more money, and more freedom!

My plan was to officially launch myself into full-time self-employment in the month of January. New year, new start! What I had previously failed to mention is that I had actually started planning events alongside my day job quite a few years before I decided to take the leap and run my business full time.

I had already begun to build a portfolio of clients and along with experience over the years had accumulated a lot of inventory along the way, which I would hire out to clients that were holding events. Things such as furniture, decorations, and wedding accessories to name but a few. I literally had a storage unit full of items which for me, at the time of resigning, was reassuring because I knew I would have an immediate income stream renting these things out.

This is where things get crazy…

On the 1st of January, I received an unexpected email, informing me that the storage unit where I had kept my business inventory, had burnt down and that everything on the premises was unsalvageable...

I'm not joking…

I was devastated! I couldn't believe it! For goodness sake! I had just quit my job!

That was the first time in my life that I remember feeling like I just wanted to give up and believe me, I do not get defeated easily at all, I am a fighter, but this was a lot!

Because of what had happened with my dad and what was currently happening at that time it felt like I was losing it. For about two solid weeks after finding out about the storage unit I couldn't even get dressed, I didn't want to do anything and was really struggling to pull myself together.

The blessing I had at that time was an amazing support network, which consisted of both friends and family. They were continuously rooting for me.

After a few weeks, I decided that it was time to end the pity party and I returned to full fighting mode. I was now thinking about how I would overcome the obstacles sent my way, how I would grow and restore my business and what the best way forward was from the crazy situation I found myself in.

I began working relentlessly on my business and eventually started two other businesses, which I'm proud of and which are doing very well today and the Women's Entrepreneurial Network is thankfully one of them.

I love telling this story because it is a prime example of how things can turn themselves around for the better and present opportunities that may not have evolved if the outcome had been any different. It is testament that we all face challenges along the way, but it is important for us to learn to always put our right foot forward, take chances, keep going, never stop, never give up, fight for what you want and for your dreams.

It's an amazing feeling to be in a position where I can share my experience with you and if it inspires just 1 out of 100 people, then I’m WINNING!

I have now been running WEN for about 5 years, and in my experience, I have had to adapt, learn and excel in areas I knew nothing about. I work with entrepreneurial women, helping them to understand and grow their businesses by improving in areas such as business planning, branding, marketing, lead generation, goal setting, productivity and accountability. I have made it my mission to share my skills and knowledge with business owners who may be struggling in some of these areas and offer valuable advice to help others really push boundaries in their businesses.
